Did you know that ...

  • 1.85 million people entered the Library last year; on a busy day, more than 15,000 people visit.
  • Guelph students can access more than 11,000 electronic journals and databases online.
  • The reference staff answer 40,000 questions each year, on any and all subjects.
  • There are over 150 library staff.
  • There are over 300 public workstations to use and 150 laptops to borrow.
  • More than 20,000 students received free academic help from Learning Commons programs last year.
  • The Library staff includes 22 librarians, 34 professional staff, 78 support staff and 22 casual staff for a total of 156 people.
  • Three national surveys naming Guelph the top comprehensive university in Canada included top marks for the Library. The surveys were Maclean's annual university ranking, the Globe and Mail's 2006 University Report Card and the annual Top 50 Research Universities ranking by Research Infosource Inc.
  • The University of Guelph Library is a member of the elite Association of Research Libraries, which represents the top 120 of about 3,400 research libraries in North America.
  • Michael Ridley, Chief Librarian and Chief Information Officer, was named 2007 Academic Librarian of the Year by the Ontario College and University Library Association (a division of the Ontario Library Association).
  • The annual cost of some academic journals is more than $35,000 per year.
  • An innovative partnership with the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University — the TriUniversity Group of Libraries — provides access to a total of 7 million volumes, including U of G's own collection of 2.5 million.
  • The Library budget is approximately $14 million, with $6 million devoted to upgrading the collection and $8 million to pay for personnel, information technology and operating expenses.
  • There are more than 300 public workstations in the Library, which offer full access to the Internet, online databases, and software for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets and other applications.
  • 150 laptops are available for use. Wireless access is available throughout the building.
  • The Library has more than 1,400 seats for study and learning; during peak study times all of these spaces are in use.
  • During the school term, the Library is open from 8am to 2am every day. Many resources are available 24 hours a day over the Internet.
  • Archival and Special Collections' L.W. Conolly Theatre Archives are the best of their kind in North America. Other renowned holdings include collections of agricultural history and rural heritage, landscape architecture, Scottish Studies and culinary heritage.
  • The Library is affiliated with the libraries at U of G's Campus d'Alfred, Kemptville Campus, and Ridgetown Campus, and the University of Guelph-Humber.
