About Me

Teaching Awards | Recent Publications | Editorial Work | Selected Conference Presentations

As Learning and Curriculum Support Librarian, I work collaboratively with faculty, educational developers, library colleagues and other academic support units on campus to enhance student learning and skill development.  One successful partnership resulted in the creation of a “writing-in-the-sciences” project and complementary, open access, electronic journal (da Vinci’s Notebook) that gives introductory Nanoscience students the true-to-life experience of the scholarly communication process. In 2009 the University of Guelph Faculty Association honoured me with the “Academic Librarianship Award.”

Before moving to Guelph in 2004, I was a lecturer in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Queen's University where I coordinated the team-taught, graduate-level communication skills course I had developed with a colleague. After the second year of offering the course our contributions to teaching were recognized by the "2002 Faculty of Health Sciences Education Award."

Supporting Women and Girls in Science
My work with female graduate students in science and engineering at Queen’s inspired my collaborative book project Success Strategies for Women in Science: A Portable Mentor (2006, Elsevier Inc.). Since its publication, I have presented at regional, national, and international, conferences and symposia, and conduct workshops for early- and mid-career female scientists.

Supporting aspiring scientists before they enter university is important to me. As “SONIC Coach” I wrote a monthly career advice column for a web site dedicated to supporting teenagers interested in careers in health research (see "Articles as "SONIC COACH"") until funding for the program ended.

In addition to these professional teaching, speaking, and mentoring activities, I actively support people seeking to improve their speaking and leadership skills. I am a member of Toastmasters International, and former President of Town and Gown Toastmasters in Guelph.

Articles as “SONIC COACH

The “SONIC Coach” collection consists of 22 articles offering practical advice (monthly) and profiles of emerging careers in health research (bimonthly) for high school students interested in careers in science. The program was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and conducted in partnership with Bioscience Education Canada (BCE) and the Manitoba Network for Science and Technology (MindSet). Until funding for the program ended in 2008 the articles were accessible through a link from its parent site, Cell Signals. The complete collection (September 2007-May 2008) is now available through the University of Guelph’s Institutional Repository (“Atrium”):
