Parents and families are important partners in the education of our students. At Learning Services, we recognize and value your role in supporting your student's academic success, and in providing information, referral, and encouragement to take advantage of the services available at Guelph.
Learning Services works with students at all levels, including:
We offer a comprehensive range of programs and services on topics such as:
To learn more about university-level academics at Guelph, visit our online "mini-course," designed to show first-year students what it's like to take lecture notes, process academic text, create integrated study notes, and take a multiple choice test in a university learning environment.
This website includes the full range of academic resources, services, and technologies available in the Library to help make the transition to university learning smooth and successful for your son or daughter in first year.
The most effective form of support for students, particularly those who may be struggling academically, is individual assistance. Our professional staff and Learning Peer Helpers provide free, confidential help by appointment. Working with students one-on-one allows us to assess all the factors that may be influencing a student's academic performance, and to tailor information and advice to meet his or her specific needs.
Please note that we do not provide "tutoring" — our services focus on effective strategies and study approaches for dealing with different types of courses, rather than addressing specific content or assignments. If your son or daughter is thinking about hiring a tutor, please direct him or her to the Tutoring at Guelph website.
For students who prefer a group format, we offer a range of free workshops on topics such as managing time and controlling procrastination, preparing for midterms, and writing multiple-choice exams.
Learning Services has an array of free print- and web-based resources, ranging from quick tips on learning topics to in-depth resources on time management and university learning.
For information about other academic support services, including writing support, research help, and the Supported Learning Groups program, please visit the Learning Commons website. For more information for the parents and families of entering students, see the Centre for New Students' website for Parents & Families.
