Terms and Conditions for Conversation Partners

Purpose

Conversation Partners is a strictly volunteer program, designed to help EAL and International students at the University of Guelph to improve their spoken English.

A conversation helper will be paired with an EAL or International student by Learning Commons staff and, once paired, participants will make their own time and location arrangements for meeting. Suggested meeting frequency is once or twice a week for a total of approximately two hours per week. Meetings are informal and should provide an opportunity for EAL students to practice their spoken English, as well as for both participants to share cultural perspectives.

By volunteering or participating in the program, I agree to the following:

  • I am currently registered as a University of Guelph student, and will be registered during the semester in which I am participating.
  • I am available 2 hours per week for the period of one semester. If my availability changes I will contact the Conversation Partners Program. (Any student wishing to renew her/his registration with Conversation Partners must re-register each semester.)
  • I will abide by University of Guelph policies and procedures, including mandates set out by the Human Rights and Equity Office, Student Rights and Responsibilities, and any other applicable policies.
  • I acknowledge that University of Guelph takes no responsibility for the quality of service provided by the conversation helper or the quality of interaction between the helper and the EAL student.
  • I am aware that participants and volunteers are not screened or supervised in any way. (Keep safety in mind when meeting your Conversation Partner.)
  • I am responsible for paying for my own expenses if my partner and I decide to attend an event that costs money (coffee, admission, etc.).
  • I am aware that this service is designed to provide an opportunity for the improvement of English through conversation. Writing or other academic assistance is not considered part of this program, and it is not permitted under the terms of this agreement. Conversation helpers should not provide writing assistance and EAL students should not request it.

Please direct any concerns, complaints or suggestions to the Learning Commons at
