Conversation Partners logo

Conversation Partners is a program that links English as an Additional Language (EAL) students with non-EAL students for English language practice. It gives EAL students an opportunity to improve their spoken English and to learn about Canadian culture as well as the academic culture at the University of Guelph. At the same time, their English-speaking partners gain an expanded appreciation of cultural diversity and cultural knowledge that is difficult to absorb through texts or lectures.

The program, which is run during Fall and Winter semesters, is operated on a volunteer basis by the Learning Commons. EAL students are matched up with English-speaking volunteers, and we attempt as much as possible to link partners with similar interests.

What is the time commitment?

Once partners are matched, they meet an average of 2 hours a week throughout the semester. The timing, location, and frequency of these informal meetings are at the discretion of the participants.

Do I need previous experience to volunteer?

All you need is a willingness to meet with your partner regularly for casual conversation. Volunteers are invited to attend an orientation session at the start of term. We'll also help by providing information and suggestions about activities and field trips.

Where do partners meet for conversations?

Partners themselves decide how they wish to spend their time, although the Learning Commons provides suggestions for possible activities such as the following:

  • Meeting for a cup of coffee in one of the campus restaurants
  • Going for a walk in the Arboretum
  • Attending a Guelph Gryphon athletic event
  • Going downtown or to a movie

This type of informal meeting is a wonderful opportunity to talk about idioms or slang words and phrases that are rarely included in foreign-language dictionaries or grammar texts.

The program also hosts conversation cafes and other events during the fall and winter semesters. Check Reg for upcoming events.

NOTE: This service is intended to provide an opportunity for the improvement of idiomatic English through conversation only, writing assistance is not included in the program. Multilingual students who wish such assistance should contact Writing Services in the Learning Commons and make arrangements to see one of our trained writing consultants.
