Value to Researchers

  • Easy electronic submission process — Dspace technology allows the use of simple online forms for submission of materials. Researchers simply fill in the registration form providing descriptive information about the material and attach all necessary files.
  • Retain author rights — For unpublished materials, our repository licence model allows authors to select the rights they wish to retain as well as the rights they wish to grant to others. The University of Guelph’s repository uses the Creative Commons Licence as our standard model.

For published works, our contacts on copyright issues can advise authors on options available to them. Many major publishing firms now allow copies (usually pre-print versions) to be deposited in the home repository of the original author.

  • Increase access and readership to your work — Web search engines such as Google can locate listings within repositories. Similarly, "harvesters" like the one at CARL, gather information from repository collections and provide a single source for searching multiple sites simultaneously. This significantly increases the visibility of an author’s work. For individuals or institutions unable to afford subscriptions to expensive journals, this can drastically increase the amount of research material available to them.
  • Ensure preservation of your research — A variety of preservation measures, such as file migration, will be undertaken to ensure that the materials deposited in the repository are preserved over time.
  • Perpetual access — The mandate of the institutional repository is to preserve the scholarly output of the institution.
  • Permanent links to work through the assignment of a permanent URL (DOI) — Each object in the repository is assigned a permanent URL, ensuring that access to materials is maintained over the long term.
