Data Consultation and Management

Text Size: S M L XL

Managing research data is an important element of any research project. Creating a data management plan at the outset of your project will prove to be an invaluable time-saving decision. Not only will your resources be better organized as your project progresses, but your ability to work within ethical, funding and government policy requirements is greatly increased. A sound data management strategy ensures that your data will be accessible to other researchers and be preserved for future generations.

We can assist you with your data management needs by identifying secure storage, recommending appropriate metadata practices, and consulting with you about external data repositories. We would be happy to work with you to develop a full data management strategy for your research project.

We offer personalized consultations for University of Guelph graduate students, researchers and research groups related to:

    • Data management planning
    • Data collection strategies
    • Legal obligations
    • File naming conventions
    • File backup options
    • File preservation strategies
    • File versioning
    • Metadata creation
• Data sharing options

Increasingly, government and other funding agencies are establishing policies requiring researchers to preserve and make accessible data created from public funds. Some examples of these policies are listed below.

Policy on Access to Research Outputs
CIHR (Canadian Institutes of Health Research) In September 2007 CIHR announced its new policy on ensuring access and preservation of funded research.

SSHRC Data Archiving Policy
This policy calls for the preservation of research outputs into local institutional repositories as a funding requirement

Government of Canada Access to Research Results: Guiding Principles
These principles are intended to guide the policies of Canadian funding agencies

Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Declaration
See Annex 1 for declaration on Access to Research Data from Public Funding, January 30, 2004.
