Hardware

The McLaughlin Library building houses the largest public computing facility on campus. There are 425 computers, comprised of 300 desktop workstations and 125 wireless-ready laptops.

Computers shutdown after 30 minutes of idle time (the screen saver "McLaughlin Library" appears after 10 minutes of idle time). Work could be lost that is not saved when the computer reboots. Computers shutdown automatically when the Library closes and cannot be used until the Library opens again. Warning messages appear prior to this automatic shutdown telling people to save their work.

  • Adaptive Software
    Jaws and Zoomtext are on all computers throughout the library. For more information on adaptive softare please see the Library Centre for Students with Disabilities
  • Data Software
    SPSS, SAS, S-Plus, Matlab, and ESRI GIS are available on all computers in the library.

  • E-mail
    There are no specific e-mail programmes on any of the computers, but the Web browser on all computers can access U of G webmail.
  • Equation Editor Excel add-ins
    Works with recent versions of Excel.

  • Foodworks
    To use the Food Works program, go to Start > Courseware. Then click on the Food Works icon. be sure to use external storage to save your files.
  • FTP (File Transfer)
    Normal file transfers can use Core FTP

  • GIS software
    ESRI, ArcView 3.3, ArcGIS 9.0 and ArcGIS 9.2 are available in the Data Resource Centre

    ArcGIS 9.2 is available on all public computers in the Library. Save data and projects to CD or USB key. Three computers in the DRC have ESRI ArcView 3.3 and ArcGIS 9.2 installed. A login and password are required. Consult the DRC staff for details.

  • Microsoft Office 2007
    Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access are available on all Library public computers. Microsoft Office programs save copies of work every 10 minutes (autobackup) to the D: drive. To restore files after a reboot/power failure, go to the D: drive and double-click on the most recent appropriately named file (it will have the file extension .asd).
  • PDF creator

    Create a PDF (Portable Document Format — a pseudo-standard for elctronic documents) of any document by opening the document, choosing File > Print, then choosing PDF creator.

  • Telnet
    PuTTy is capable of accessing standard telnet connections as well as secure shell machines.

  • Web browser
    Internet Explorer version 7 including most popular plugins: Adobe Acrobat, Flash, Shockwave, Authorware, Quicktime (via Windows Media Player), Real Media (via Windows Media Player), B2020.
