Workstations in the Library have disk drives that are accessible by any user.
Files on the S: drive are visible from any public computer in the McLaughlin Library and several computer labs across campus. This also means that anyone on those computers can edit or delete these files. Do not use the S drive as a permanent storage location.
Files on the D: drive (My documents folder) are visible only by people on that specific computer and are not visible on any other public computer in the McLaughlin Library.
Do not save files to the Desktop or C: drive as they will be lost when the computer reboots.
Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) save copies of work every 10 minutes (autobackup) to the D: drive. To restore files after a reboot/power failure go to the D: drive and double-click on the most recent approprately named file (they will have the extension .asd).
Also, the contents of these disk spaces are cleared on a regular basis. Files that are stored here after you finish your session will not be there when you return.
Although they are pretty much obsolete, at the U of G McLaughlin Library, the public computers still have floppy disk drives. However, you must supply the floppy disk yourself.
If you have trouble removing your diskette from the floppy drive, do not force it. Ask Library staff for help.
All computers are equipped with USB ports on the front of the computer which can accept USB flash drives ("keys".) What's a USB key?
Each University of Guelph student has space — a quota — on their central login account. This space is used up as you save e-mail and other files. You can check your quota at any give time by visiting my accounts.
To save your file to this space, send yourself an e-mail and attach the file to your e-mail.
Save to Briefcase in Gryphmail.
You can burn to a CD on any Dell computer in the library by using Roxio CD Creator or the Windows XP utility.
