Criteria

Originality: Content in the submitted books must be original, that is, previously unpublished.

Eligible exceptions:

  • Books that reprint historic material from an original primary source must incorporate a minimum of 30% new material, such as commentary or research by the author.
  • Books that are revised or updated must contain a minimum of 30% new material. A copy of the original work must be submitted too.

Translations: A book published in both French and English will be judged in the language in which it was originally written. It cannot be entered in both the English-language and French-language contests.

Publication Criteria:

  • Books must be written by a Canadian author who is either a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
  • Books must be published by a Canadian publisher or self-published in Canada.
  • Books must be published during the calendar year. For the 2012 awards, the book must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2011.
