Culinary Landmarks: a bibliography of Canadian cookbooks, 1825-1949

Culinary Landmarks is a definitive history and bibliography of Canadian cookbooks from the beginning, when La Cuisinière Bourgeoise was published in Quebec City in 1825, to the mid-twentieth century. The author, Elizabeth Driver, is a culinary historian and bibliographer, whose area of expertise is cookbooks. Currently, she directs the foodways program at Montgomery's Inn Museum in Toronto, and serves as President of the Culinary Historians of Ontario.

Tickets are now on sale for three multi-course dinners that will raise funds for the annual Canadian Culinary Book Awards, which are sponsored by the University of Guelph and Cuisine Canada. Culinary Book Awards 2003

A feast of award-winning Canadian cookbooks entered the Archives' Culinary Collection following the National Culinary Book Awards held in Toronto on September 22. Twelve awards were given to the best English- and French-language books of the year from Canadian authors and publishers, the sixth such event recognizing Canada's leading food writers.

Jacques Orhon receives the Gold for his Special Interest Food and Beverage Book, Le nouveau guide des vins d'Italie. Presenting the award is Ginette Chapdelaine, Chair of Cuisine Canada's Board of Directors.

During the event, Cuisine Canada President Ginette Chapdelaine announced their new association with the University of Guelph to co-host the awards.

"This partnership can only enhance our knowledge of Canadian cuisine," said Michael Ridley, Chief Librarian, University of Guelph. "Our Archival Culinary Collection at the university contains more than 5000 volumes which are invaluable in documenting how people cook and what that means about life."

Cuisine Canada is a national alliance of Canadian culinary professionals who share a common desire to encourage the development, use and recognition of fine Canadian food and beverages. The awards this year were sponsored by KitchenAid and the Canadian Tourism Commission.
