Course Reserves & e-Learning Services
The E-Learning Operations and Reserve Services unit supports traditional paper-based reserve services while offering simple ways to integrate electronic content directly into courseware and other university learning spaces.
Contact us for assistance with:
- Converting traditional course reserve lists to electronic formats for online use.
- Obtaining and paying for copyright permission so book chapters, articles and other print materials can be used in electronic formats.
- Providing electronic content that can be integrated directly into Courselink (D2L) or course Web sites.
- Providing stable links to full text articles in e-journals or e-books.
- Copyright and licensing issues in support of teaching and research.
To place materials on Course Reserve, or make them available through Courselink (Desire2Learn), submit requests through the Ares Course Reserve System, or by phone, email, or in person.
The ARES Course Reserve system is now using Single Sign-On (SSO). A major benefit of SSO is the access to Course Reserve items directly from CourseLink (D2L) without logging in each time. For more information on SSO see the CCS website.
Instructors, please note that once logged in, you will be viewing your course lists in Student Mode . Click on Switch to Instructor Mode to access the full range of instructor and course tools.
Use the Ares Course Reserve System now.
Place materials on Reserve, including Library books, your own materials, course notes, assignments, exams, audiovisual items, and documents in print or electronic format.
The Ares Course Reserves System enables instructors to easily create and reactivate course lists as well as add new items to courses, while providing students with an easy-to-use, customizable interface for viewing course reserve readings.
Using Ares, instructors are able to:
- Review past, future and current course reserve lists online, any time
- Place materials on Reserve in any format (PowerPoint, MP3 files, etc.)
- Integrate lists of links to online Reserve readings into Courselink (Desire2Learn)
- Automatically notify students by e-mail or RSS feed when Reserve items become available
- View up-to -the minute data indicating which items are being used by students.
How to use Ares
To get started, log in to the Ares Course Reserves System using your UG Central login ID.
Courses for which you currently have materials on Reserve will be displayed in the Main Menu.
- Click on a course to add new Reserve items, or sign up to receive e-mail notifications about the course. You may also e-mail yourself a list of links to upload to Courselink (Desire2Learn), or get instructions on how to include your Ares course reserve readings in your Courselink pages.
- Use Create A Course List to add a new course, or click on Previous Course Lists to view reserve materials from courses you have taught in previous semesters. "Clone" course lists to reactivate previously reserved materials for an upcoming semester.
- If others will be creating and adding items to a course on your behalf, add them using the Course Proxy Users option. You can also assign someone as a proxy user for all of your courses by designating him or her as a Full Proxy User.
- Select Switch to Student Mode to view your course list as your students will see it. (Students only see items which are currently available and not those which are still being processed and/or awaiting copyright permission). Assign tags to items in your list to help your students find and sort items more easily.
- Click on Reserve Item Usage to view which readings on your courses are being used and how much. You may also wish to use the Chat and Messageboard features to communicate with your students.
