These datasets are subject to licences that restrict acccess and use to University of Guelph users and are only available on campus or if logged into the Library's Web site. GIS software (eg. Arcview, ArcGIS) is required.

Canada

Canadian Census Geographic Data

  • Canadian Census Geographic Data
    Contains files for a variety of levels of census data for the census years 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996 and 2001. Early years contain fewer geographic census files. The files are stored in ArcInfo and MapInfo formats.

    The files also contain Census 2001 Reference Maps and Thematic Maps in PDF format. To use this data, abbreviation codes are available for 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006.

  • DMTI Canadian Geospatial Data
    Publishes Canadian Geospatial Data. Products include Canadian Atlas Map Bundle, CanMap Water, CanMap Street files, Census Demographic Data and Boundaries, CanMap Route Logistics, CanMap Parks and Recreation, CanRail, Clutter Data, Digital Elevation Model Data, Enhanced Points of Interest, Postal Code data, Satellite Streetview imagery and Geopinpoint (geocoding addresses software).

  • Global GIS Database
    This product is a digital world atlas developed by the U.S. Geological Survey and published by the American Geological Institute. It consists of 7 regional CDs. Available in the Library — send a request to the DRC

 

Digital Elevation Models

Ontario

  • Digital Terrain Model of Southern Ontario
    Representation of a topographical surface, specifically a regular grid of spot heights and breaklines (noticeable changes in slope).
  • DEM Ver. 2.0.0
    Waterstream, watershed boundaries, and DEM data (ver. 2.0.0.) by individual tiles within UTM zones. A high resolution raster data set covering the province of Ontario to the 51st parallel.

Canada

  • Canadian Digital Elevation Data (Download from Geobase)
    CDED based on National Topographic Database digital files at the 1:50 000 and 1:250 000 scales.
  • DMTI Digital Elevation Model Data
    DMTI publishes Canadian geospatial data. It includes street maps, census data and boundaries, DEM data, postal geography, topograhic maps and geocoding technology.

Geology & Soil

Ontario

  • Soils Data for Canada & Ontario
    Contains Ontario soil surveys by county and seamless provincial soil coverage. Not all counties are available — see National Soils Database for other Ontario surveys and for soil surveys from other provinces.
  • Bedrock Geology of Ontario (Available in the DRC in CD format)
    This CD has seamless coverage of the geological map of Ontario and shows the distribution of bedrock units underlying Ontario. It illustrates geological rock types, major faults, granulite areas, iron formations and ike swarms. Legends, explanatory notes, metadata and details of the ArcView and CAD data sets are provided in Microsoft Word 97 and RTF file formats.
  • Physiography of Southern Ontario
    Overview of glacial geology in Ontario.
  • NOTE: Bedrock of Geology of Ontario - Seamless Coverage and Surficial Geology of Southern Ontario are available for download from the DRC Geospatial Data Explorer
    To download geospatial data from off-campus users will first need to install CISCO IPSec VPN Access software available (a free download) from the University of Guelph CCS software distribution Web site.
  • Quaternary Geology of Ontario (Available in the DRC in CD format)
    The data sets illustrate the general distribution of the various types of Quaternary sediments and the major landforms associated with them. Tills, glaciofluvial, glaciolacustrine, glaciomarine, fluvial, lacustrine and organic deposits are represented by 30 distinct geological uniteds illustrating the Quaternary stratigraphy of Ontario. Legends, explanatory notes, metadata and details of the ArcView and CAD data sets are provided in Microsoft Word 97 and RTF file formats.
  • Surficial Geology of Southern Ontario (Available in the DRC in CD format)
    This data set is a GIS based geological map that shows the distribution and characteristics of surficial units across southern Ontario. The map illustrates surficial deposit types, material types, geological features (e.g. drumlins, eskers), general bedrock types and outcrop areas. The data used to generate the map was derived from Quaternary maps (mostly at a scale of 1:50,000).

    Part of the SWOOP collection provided by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Orthoimagery in JPEG 2000 format.

    Available on CD in the DRC office. Contact for access. We are waiting for the 2010 SWOOP files to be made available through Scholars Geoportal.

  • City of Guelph Orthophotography 2006
    Part of the SWOOP collection provided by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Orthoimagery in Mr. Sid format.

    Search for and download the physiography data from the Data Resource Centre Geospatial Data Explorer.
    (Note: to download geospatial data from off-campus users will first need to install CISCO IPSec VPN Access software available (a free download) from the University of Guelph CCS software distribution Web site.)

    Also available on CD-ROM. Resolution is 10 cm. Available in the Library by contacting the DRC.
  • Grand River Geospatial Data Orthoimagery
    Orthoimagery combines the characteristics of an aerial photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. Download is available on the GRCA website or from Data Resource Centre Geospatial Data Explorer by searching SWOOP.

    Ortho photos of Southern Ontario regions including Niagara/Greater Toronto Area and Lambton County. MrSid format. Flown 2002.

  • CanImage (Download from Geobase)
    A Landsat 7 orthoimage coverage of the entire Canadian landmass. Based on the National Topographic System (NTS) at the 1:50 000 scale. This product is distributed in GeoTIFF format. The spectral bands have a pixel size of 15 m.
  • Satellite Streetview

    This product is an integrated dataset of ortho-rectified and seamless mosaiced QuickBird Satellite pan-sharperned data combined with CanMap streets.

  • City of Ottawa Geospatial Data
    A compilation of GIS data and free viewer available at the City of Ottawa Web site. Use eMap to search by address, intersection, street segment or by facility. Interact with this Web-based software by zooming in and out, by adding additional layers of information or by printing the current view of the map.

    To use eMap you will require the Autodesk MapGuide viewer. You will be alerted if a download is required. Downloading the viewer is only required the first time you use the map.

    VMAP (Vector Map Level 0) World coverage of many topographic map themes.

    Coloured topographic / aeronautic maps, scanned and georeferenced.

 

Watershed

  • Great Lakes Bathymetric Data
    Bathymetry of Lake Ontario; Lake Erie and Lakes St. Clair and Ontario; and Lake Michigan. Available in the Library on CD by contacting the DRC.
  • Grand River Conservation Authority
    The Grand River Conservation Authority Watershed Data covers the entire watershed and provides information on a wide variety of subjects including boundaries, surface drainage, water quality, wetlands, soils, and more. Available in the Library by contacting the DRC.
  • Ontario Flow Assessment Techniques
    Waterbasin data for Ontario. Used for automatic watershed delineation and hydrologic modelling. Library holds Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Ontario, Lake Superior and Moose River basins. Available in the Library by contacting the DRC.
  • Water Resources Information Project
    Waterstream and watershed data from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources.
