GIS Interest Group

This group was established to address the growing demand of GIS usage amongst students, faculty and staff in a wide range of disciplines across campus.

Mandate

  • To provide an alerting service to new data sets, software updates and learning opportunities
  • To discuss learning and research opportunities for students, faculty and staff interested in using GIS
  • To share information regarding GIS initiatives on locally, nationally and internationally
  • To communicate and explore new opportunities for GIS resources (software and spatial data)
  • To explore co-operative ventures between centralized GIS providers and individual departments and faculties to enrich resources for everyone

Membership

The membership of this group is open to all individuals who have an interest in the use of GIS resources for teaching, research, and administrative support.

Group communication is via the gis_interest list. To be added to this list, send an email to and in the body of the message write:

SUBSCRIBE gis_interest your name

Meetings

Twice a semester during the 2nd or 3rd week and the week following midterms.

The agenda will be generated by the needs/interest of the group. Meetings could include demonstrations of software, data and software and data vendor visits.

Other Events

  • Topical Workshops offered by group members (faculty or advanced students) with an expertise in particular areas that should be shared to further promote learning among disciplines. These could be software specific, such as additional functionality or extensions available within ArcGIS, or topical, such as hydrologic modeling, habitat modeling, precision farming data management and GPS data processing techniques.
  • Educations/career days
  • GIS Day or other mini conferences
