The GRCA has recently launched a new collection of Web-GIS and data download tools. These self-serve, Web-based tools will enable users to make custom maps of the Grand River watershed, download GRCA's GIS data, obtain links to other watershed-related resources, and more. This collection of tools and services is accessed through GRCA's new Grand River Information Network.

Access

Instructions

  1. To access the Grand River Information Network, go to the GRCA Web site. On the left hand side under the category heading "Online Services", click on the link titled GRIN: Maps, aerial photos, data & more to access the Grand River Information Network portal. Before viewing any GRCA data, users are required to read and agree to the terms and conditions of use.
  2. Click Create a Map to use the interactive mapping service to create your maps.
  3. Click GIS Data Access to download the GRCA's GIS data (vector, raster grids, imagery). Click on the Data Download Tool. Users will need to register before downloading.
  4. After submitting a request for data, an email will be sent containing the url download link.
  5. The download package contains the gis data, metadata, a data dissemination report, and the GRCA license agreement.

Projection, Datum & Scale

  • NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_17N
  • Vertical geodetic datum is Mean Sea Level.
  • Source scale for the raster data is 1:50,000 and, for all but two of the datasets, the resolution is 200 metres. Resolution for the digital elevation model and landcover is 25 metres.

Data Format

  • Raster data is provided in geoTIFF format
  • Vector data is provided in shapefile format

Metadata

  • Includes a general description (abstract, geographic coverage, scale, and feature type)
  • Provides georeferencing details, data sources, and conversion information
  • Contains contact information, structure, coding, definitions, and tables if available
  • To view the metadata, use the interactive mapping tool, click the Layers button, open a folder to view individual layers, and click on the layer name to display more information.

Orthoimagery GRCA Watershed

Spring 2006 orthoimagery will be available for download in the coming weeks, at which time the April 2000 orthos will no longer be available for download. In the meantime contact the Data Resource Centre for access to the 2006 orthoimagery or download from the SWOOP(Southwester Ontario Orthophotography Project) site.
