Displaying NTDB Information

This page is designed to help you display the NTDB information in ArcView 3.x.

Note: NTDB digital maps are available at the DRC in the library.

The Procedure

  1. Open ArcView. Choose the Start > Programs > ArcView GIS version 3.1.
  2. When ArcView opens, it will display the following window. At the prompt sceen, select Create a New Project with a New View.

  3. When you are prompted to add a new theme, click Yes.

  4. Navigate to the Shared Maps on GISdrc (u:) folder and open the NTDB folder. Select a folder containing the information you want and select your file. Click OK. (For this example we are going to use the folder 040p09 which contains Guelph files. We will draw the roads and the trails in Guelph.)

    Note: each folder is named in a special code which represents an NTDB grid. Go to the NTDB site to find out what kind of file each folder holds.

    For more information on layer names and attribute data consult the NTDB Data Dictionary.

  5. Once you press OK, the files will be imported into ArcView. To show the files, click the box beside them in the table of contents. Your view should be similar to the one below.
