Data in .E00 is an ARC/INFO interchange file format developed to enable users to move data into and out of ARC/INFO.

Instructions for Adding .E00 Data

Adding .E00 Data in ArcView 3.x Using Import71

Import71 is a stand-alone program that converts an ARC/INFO interchange file to a format that can be added to a view in ArcView. Import71 comes with the ArcView software.

  1. Go to the folder where your ArcView shortcuts are installed: Start > Programs > ArcView > Import71
  2. An Import71 dialog box will open. For the Export Filename, use the Browse button and navigate to the directory where the file is located (e.g. C:\temp\gcsd010b02a_e.e00). Select the file and click Open.
  3. You need to indicate where you want to import the coverage to. Click the Browse button next to the Output Data Source box and navigate to the directory you want the coverage located (or copy the path in the Export Filename minus the .e00 extension (e.g. C:\temp\gcsd010b02a_e to save the output data in the same directory as the .e00 file.)
  4. Click the OK button to start the import process. Depending on the size of the file the process, could take a few seconds or a few minutes. A pop-up message will indicate that the import was successful.
  5. Open ArcView and click the Add Theme button to add the data to a view.

Adding .E00 Data Using ArcGis 9

These instructions are for ArcGIS9.1 (ArcINFO version) with ArcINFO Workstation installed. If you have not installed Workstation, or are using another version of the software, you will not be able to use these instructions. Please contact the DRC for assistance if you are trying to open an .E00 with another version of the software.

  1. Open ArcMap: Start > Programs >; ArcGIS >; ArcMAP. Open a new map.
  2. Open ArcToolbox by clicking the ArcToolbox icon.

  3. In the Toolbox menu expand the following folders: Coverage Tools > Conversion > To Coverage.
  4. Double-click Import from Interchange File. When the Import from Interchange dialogue box opens, click on Show Help to see instructions for each entry you will need to make. Instructions will show on the right as you progress through the form.
  5. In the Input Interchange File box, click on Browse to navigate to the location of the .E00 file and click Open (eg. c:\temp\gcsd010b02a_e.e00). By default, the Output Dataset will be saved in the same directory as the Input Interchange File (c:\temp\gcsd010b02a_e). If you wish to save it in a different directory, use the Browse button and navigate to the desired directory and give the Output dataset a name (e.g. c:\census\nfld_ct).
  6. Click the OK button to start the import process. A pop-up box will appear indicating that the processing is complete. Click Close.
  7. In ArcMap, click the Add Data button to navigate to the data and add it to your project.
