Follow the steps below for viewing the Orthoimagery for the City of Guelph (MrSID format) using ArcGIS.

  1. Open ArcMap. When prompted to create A New Empty Map, click OK.

  2. Click the Add Data button.
  3. When the Add Data dialog box opens, navigate to the directory where the orthoimage is located. Select the image and click Add.

  4. When the screen One or more layers is missing spatial reference... appears, Click OK (in the next step the projection will be added so that other vector data can be layered over the image.)

  5. To define the projection, right-click the "data frame" not the image (in this example the data frame is called Layers.

  6. Select Properties and click on the Coordinate System tab.

  7. Open the Predefined folder and select Projected Coordinate Systems, UTM, NAD 1983, UTM Zone 17N. Click OK.

Other projected data can now be added. Note that the projection is temporary. To assign a permanent projection, use the ArcToolbox projection tool for GRID files.
