MrSID – ArcView 3.3

The Orthoimage for the City of Guelph is in MrSID format. This procedure will describe the steps to bring the image into ArcView and define a projection so that other datasets can be layered.

  1. Open Arcview.
  2. Create a new project as a blank project. Click OK.

  3. To add the image, the MrSID Image Support extension needs to be turned on: Choose File > Extensions. Scroll down until you find the MrSID Image Support. Place a check in the box beside this option and click OK.

  4. Add the image to a View in Arcview. In the ArcView project manager, select Views and click New.
  5. Click the Add Theme button.
  6. In the Add Theme dialog box, navigate to the directory where the MrSID image is located. Change the Data Source Types to Image Data Source by using the drop down menu. Choose the image file and click OK.

  7. When the MrSID image appears in the View, make the image visible by clicking in the box beside the image name.

  8. The Defining a Projection step is necessary if the user wishes to overlay vector data such as roads, municipal boundaries or building footprints. Click View, then Properties, then click Projection.

  9. Click the Projection... button to bring up the Projection Properties dialog box.
  10. Choose UTM – 1983 from the Category drop down menu and Zone 17 from the Type dropdown menu. Click OK, then OK again to close the Properties dialog box.

  11. To add vector data choose Adding Vector Data, click Add Theme and navigate to the location where the vector data is stored. For Data Source Types select Feature Data Source from the drop down menu. Click OK.

  12. To make the theme visible, check in the box beside the vector data theme name.
