If you require a simple statistic or two, sometimes the best and fastest search strategy is to use a resource usually called a statistical abstract or yearbook. Below is a list of examples providing easy to use tables.

Socio-economic Information

Canada

  • Canada Yearbook (GovRef CA1 BS11 C202 1869–2001) Online 1867-1967. Online 2001 –
    Provides basis statistics on population, labour force, agriculture, etc. at the federal and provincial levels.
  • Census of Canada (GovRef CA1 BS98 ..... 1668 – shelved by census year)
    Detailed population statistics, includes, place of birth, ethnicity, occupation, income, household characteristcs — every five years. See Census help page for details.
  • Census of Canada Online
    Free tables by community or by topic. Select census year of choice from left menu bar.

European Union

  • Basic Statisics of the Community (ZZ EM10 B15 1969–1996 — ceased publication)
    Basic statistics on land, people, the economy.
  • Eurostat Yearbook (ZZ EM10 E80 2000 — Current edition on reference)
    General tables covering all aspects of social life and the economy

United Kingdom

United States

  • Statistical Abstract of the United States (US1 DD1 A52 1937 – Current edition on Reference) Online 1995 -
    Basic population, labour force, industry figures for U.S. and by state
  • Historical Statistics of the United States: earliest times to the present (REF HA202 .H57 2006 – 5 volumes)
    Contains historical statistics similar to the topics covered in Statistical Abstract.
  • FedStats
    Links to statistical sources by topic or by geography.

Global

  • Demographic Yearbook (UN2 S30 D29 – 1990 – current edition on Reference)
    Basic population and vital statistics for countries worldwide.
  • Human Development Report (UN1 D H72 – 1990 – current edition on Reference) Online 1990 -
    Contains country figures on topics such as population, fertility, hunger, gender equality, health, energy, poverty and education
  • United Nations Social Indicators
    Tables include population figures, health, poverty, education, literacy etc.
  • Statistical Yearbook (UNESCO – UN9 ES61 S79 – 1964–1999)
    Figures on education spending, ratios, enrolements, staffing, culture, communications, libraries etc.
  • UNESCO Institute for Statistics
    Similar tables to the yearbook. Figures on education, enrolements, culture, communications etc.
  • World Development Indicators (UN9 MG S54 – 1976 – assorted years – current year on Reference)
    Tables include information on population, gender, health, labour force, poverty, government spending, etc. by country in the context of level of development.
  • World Factbook (US1 CI W52 – 1987 – 1999). Online — current year
    Very basic country overviews, population, GDP, communications, transportation, the economy etc.

  • Ontario Budget (CA2ON T B82 – 1932 – current year on Reference) Online 1996 -
    Detailed projected spending figures of the Ontario Government.
  • Estimates. Part III. CA1 FN E.... (current year on Reference, by department) Online 1996 -
    Detailed projected spending figures of the federal government by department.
