First-time Users

You do not need to register with Racer. If you have registered your University ID card with the Library you will be able to login to RACER.

All Users

  1. Sign in to RACER.

Your login is your University ID barcode. Your password is your last name (lowercase).

  2. Choose Guelph as your Library location.
  3. Use RACER to look for book and journal titles not held in TUG (U. Guelph, U. Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier U.) but available from other libraries. The Racer database will not search for journal articles or chapters in books.
  4. Search types:

    Advanced Search

    • In the search box, type in the full title (no abbreviations) of the journal or book you are looking for.
    • Tip: You can also search by ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) or ISBN (International Standard Book Number), an identifier number which uniquely identifies published journals and books
    • When you see the results of your search, click on the "Get It" icon from one of the libraries that hold the item
    • When you click on the "Get It" icon the bibliographic information will automatically be transferred to the Interlibrary Loan request form
    • Complete the rest of the form and "Request". Only submit one form per title
    • The request will be sent to the Guelph Interlibrary Loan office
    • To make a request for another title, click the "Advanced Search" link. Do not use the browser's back button — you will receive a "Data Missing" message

    Blank Request Form

    • Use a blank form when you can't find the item after trying a search
    • Click on the "Blank Request Form" link in the left hand navigation bar under the "My Account" heading
    • In the "Format" drop menu choose book, journal or appropriate format type
    • After completion, click the "Request" button
    • On the Copyright Notification page, click the "Request" button
    • To make another request, click the "Advanced Search" link. Do not use the browser's back button — you will receive a "Data Missing" message
  5. When you have finished, don't forget to "Sign Out".
  6. Once the item you have requested has arrived you will receive an e-mail notice from the ILL department.
  7. You will also receive an e-mail notice if:
    • The request has been cancelled because the item is available from our own collection
    • The request has been cancelled for any other reason
