Borrowing AV Materials

Most audio visual materials may be borrowed, by eligible patrons, for use outside the Library on a one-day loan. Up to two AV items may be borrowed at a time. Holds may not be placed on audio-visual items.

To borrow an AV item, take the item to the Circulation desk on the first floor to have the security case removed and the item charged out to you.

Audio visual equipment for in-library reviewing of AV materials is located next to the AV collection on the second floor in the McLaughlin Library.

The Library's collection of vinyl records (phonodiscs) is located at the Annex. Records may be retrieved from the Annex by placing a hold on the required item in the TRELLIS catalogue. The item will be available for pickup at the designated pickup location on the following business day.

Film and Video Previews

Videorecordings from the AV Collection may be viewed on the equipment located adjacent to the collection, or in the Film Preview Room in McLaughlin Library.

Titles from the library’s collection of 16mm films may only be viewed in the Film Preview room, unless they have been booked for classroom use (see below). An appointment must be booked in advance in order to view a film or video in the preview room. Appointments may be made from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday, holidays excepted. Contact Krys Mooney at extension 52313 to book a preview appointment. The preview room will accommodate up to 5 or 6 people at a time for a screening.

Booking AV materials for Classroom Showings

Most items in the Audio Visual Collection, including videos and 16 mm films (motion pictures) may be taken out of the library to be used in classrooms on campus. Films and videos must be booked at least one business day prior to the day they are required for a classroom showing. Films and videos can be booked by sending an email with all of the pertinent information (title, call number, showing date) to .

Previously booked films, videos and other AV materials may be picked up at the Circulation desk the day before the show date and should be returned to this desk the day after the showing. Extended use of items booked must be approved to ensure that items are not required for other bookings – please email such requirements to the above email address.

Off-Campus Titles

Films and videos from off-campus collections may also be obtained for classroom showings. These titles are booked in the same way as campus material (see above). A minimum of 7 business days is required to obtain a film or video from an off-campus location.

Operator and Equipment Bookings

Operators and equipment for classroom showings of films and videos must be arranged through Classroom Services by phone at extension 52778, or in person at Room 108 in Day Hall. Find more details at the TSS website.

Public Performance Rights

Some feature films and videos require public performance licenses in order to be shown in a classroom setting. They will display the following label:

AUTHORIZED FOR PRIVATE VIEWING ONLY.
A public performance license is required
for classroom showings or any public screenings.

Videos containing the above warning may not be screened in any public place, including classrooms, clubs, and places of worship, meeting rooms, or cafeterias. In order to show such a video in a classroom or other public setting, a public performance license must be purchased. This is a legal requirement.

Videos in the collection which do not display the above warning label have been purchased with public performance rights included, and may be shown in classrooms or other public places, provided no admission is charged.

Please contact Krys Mooney,
ext. 52313, for further details regarding clearance of "public performance rights for videos".
