Use the Library at home

As a Distance Education / Open Learning student, you have access to all of the Library’s print and online resources.

Many of our books and most of our journals are available online and you can access these at your home or office. Simply sign into the Library website through the Off-Campus Log In .

Your login is the barcode number on your UG student card. Your password is your last name.

If you have questions regarding your UG student card issued by the Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support, please contact Mickey Smart in the Centre for Open Learning and Educational Support.

You are welcome to visit the Library at any time in person, and to make use of the books, journals, reference sources and staff available to assist you with your research needs.

…but if you live far away

If you are unable to get to Guelph we will courier the books and print journal articles you need for your studies — and we pay the courier for both delivery and pickup.

How to order books and print journal articles

Use our courier service

Distance and open learners are eligible to use our courier service if they reside outside of a reasonable commuting distance from Guelph.

  • The Library pays for courier delivery and pickup of items to be returned.
  • A home or work address and phone number are required for delivery.
  • Deliveries are made Monday to Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Our courier service requires a signature upon delivery.
  • Our courier service will not deliver to a post office box, however if applicable please provide the emergency number and road name.
  • Delivery is generally within 2-3 business days.

How to get a book delivered to you via courier

  • Find the book you want using the Primo search tool. Note that you will see books at our sister libraries, the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University. You can order these books as well as UG books.
  • Click on the location link or Checked out link under the book title.

  • Sign in to place a hold. You will be prompted to enter your UG barcode number and last name.
  • Click "Place a hold on this item" (or recall if the book was checked out). Find the drop-down menu "Pick Up At" and select Guelph DistEd Circ as the location where items should be picked up.

  • Email immediately with the requested book information. We will retrieve, charge out, and send the item to you via courier.

How to get a printed journal article

  • Most of our journals are available online, but some older issues may only be available in print.
  • Find the journal you want using Primo.
  • Click on the title of the journal to see the detailed view.
  • Click on the "Place a TUGDoc" request link.
  • Sign in.
  • Select the relevant journal issue.
  • Fill in the form with the article author, title, and pages.
  • Next to “Tell us where to send the article” select Off campus for Guelph distance ed students
  • Click “Send your TUGdoc request.”
  • A copy of the article will be couriered to you.

How to return books to the Library

  • You will receive a pre-paid Purolator waybill with your shipment. Simply follow the included instructions and return your books before they are due back. Journal articles should not be returned.
  • Check your Library account for due dates and to renew books, if necessary.
