Guidelines for Teachers

Scheduling a visit to the University Library should be arranged by the teacher. All visits must include classroom instruction by University of Guelph Library staff. Individual classes will be  scheduled for selected mornings in November, December, the University's reading week (usually the third week of February), April and May. Requests at other times are at the discretion of the University of Guelph Library and depend on staff and space availability.

A copy of the research assignment must be submitted to the library contact two weeks before the class visit.

Since students need time to work on assignments, one half-day will be blocked off for each class. The University Library cannot accommodate more than 30-40 students at a time. The teacher must remain with the class at all times. He/she is expected to take an active part in teaching and helping the students.

Guidelines for Students

  • Students must have basic research skills which include understanding the PRIMO Library TriUniversity catalogue, and the Library of Congress classification method
  •  Please use our subject guides as a starting point for your research
  • Students must have a good understanding of their topic.  Discussing it with the teacher and also developing a list of keywords or concepts will be a useful exercise
  • To save search results, students should bring a USB storage device or save files to an email address. UofG experiences blocking to Hotmail, Rogers, and Yahoo accounts
  • Knowledge Ontario offers “Resource Ontario” whose goal is to level the playing field for all Ontarians by providing equity of access to information and learning resources; access provides training support to EBSCO & Gale databases
  • Students are expected to abide by the Library's food and drink and acceptable use policies for the building and computers

It is important to realize that University of Guelph students are the primary users of the University Library and visiting students are expected to be considerate of their need to study.
