Omni provides discovery and access to print, electronic, and audio-visual resources available from the University of Guelph, and print resources from thirteen other Ontario university libraries. You can use your U of G card to request items from any of the partner libraries online through Omni or in person. Learn more about Omni: Ontario’s new academic search tool.

How is Omni different from Primo?

U of G’s previous library discovery service, Primo was shared with Wilfred Laurier University and the University of Waterloo Libraries. This meant you had access to resources from the other two institutions. Omni is a shared service in the same way, but on a much larger scale. U of G and thirteen other institutions are sharing physical resources, infrastructure, and staff expertise to give you broader access to resources. You will experience fast and easy access to a vast collection of diverse, high-quality academic resources. Omni also brings some new and enhanced features including:
 
  • Browse physical material using the virtual shelf.
  • Follow citation trails from references within an article, and those that cite it.
  • Pin and organize materials and save searches to your Favourites for easy retrieval.
  • Create citations instantly or export citations to a reference management tool.
  • Quickly email and share permalinks of records.
  • Set up notifications for newly added materials.

What does Omni search?

The default search scope “U of G Library” searches U of G library’s local collection, both physical and electronic items. To expand your search to all Omni Libraries use the primary drop down menu and select “U of G Library + Omni Libraries”. This will search physical materials from all fourteen Omni libraries as well as electronic resources U of G users have access to.

How do I search Omni?

Although Omni replaced Primo (our previous library system), it operates using the same basic search principles. You can apply Boolean operators to focus your results. You can refine your results by using the left hand menu to Peer-reviewed Journals, Available Online, Resource Type, Publication Date, and more! Learn more about searching Omni.

Can I access resources from off campus?

Yes. You can access library resources via Omni from anywhere at anytime. Sign in to access the full text.

Why can’t I access electronic resources from other Omni libraries?

U of G library contracts with a variety of vendors and publishers to provide you with access to electronic resources like databases, e-journals, and e-books. License agreements are also negotiated that stipulate how and by whom a given resource may be used. Most often these agreements limit access to U of G users only. Other Omni libraries are restricted to institution-only access in the same way.

Did the borrowing and fines policies change?

Can I go into other Omni Libraries to borrow items? (This service is temporarily unavailable)

Yes. Your U of G card can be used at other Omni libraries to borrow (and return) items in person.

How do I request items from other Omni Libraries? (This service is temporarily unavailable)

You can request items from other Omni libraries on the Omni interface. See the step-by-step instructions for more information.

How long does it take to get items from other Omni libraries? (This service is temporarily unavailable)

Most item requests will be fulfilled within 3 - 10 days. You will receive an email when the item is ready for pickup at the location you selected.

What does “ILL. Locate Failed” mean?

No need to worry! Your item request is still active. The language indicates to staff that they must intervene manually to acquire the requested item. Most item requests will be fulfilled within 7 - 10 days. You will receive an email when your item is ready for pickup.

Can I still use RACER?

Yes. Omni searches physical items from fourteen Ontario university libraries and it is quite possible that the item you are looking for is not at any of these institutions. In that case, use RACER. Learn more about Interlibrary loans and using RACER.

Can I renew my items online?

Yes. Sign in to My Library Account on Omni. You will see a list of all of your borrowed items. Choose the items you’d like to renew or select “Renew All”.

Does Omni integrate with citation management tools (e.g., Mendeley, Zotero and EndNote)?

Yes, you can easily export items from Omni or create an instant citation in any of the major citation styles (MLA, APA, Chicago, Harvard).

Can I access Omni if I’m not currently affiliated with U of G?
