International Women’s Day Films: Choose to Challenge

This image, on a white background, is of illustrations of women from a variety of cultural backgrounds. In the upper left hand corner of the image, there are decorative circles in red, blue, yellow, and black.

International Women’s Day (IWD) is a global day of recognition celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and girls. It is also a call to action to achieve gender equality for all women. The theme of IWD 2021 is Choose to Challenge, and this collection of documentary films – by women and about women – challenges, inspires, educates, and entertains.

This International Women’s Day Films: Choose to Challenge online collection was curated by members of the GenEQ Committee in collaboration with the library to celebrate IWD. All current students, faculty, and staff have access to the collection through the library’s streaming media collection. The GenEQ Committee invites all members of the U of G community to come together (virtually) and celebrate the real-life stories of activists and trailblazers, ordinary and extraordinary women.

Some of the documentaries featured in this collection are:

  • A Normal Girl (2019)
  • Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise (2016)
  • Picture a Scientist (2020)
  • RBGThe Exceptional Life and Career of Ruth Bader Ginsburg (2018)
  • The Woman Who Loves Giraffes (2018)

Within the larger collection is a sub-collection called Guelph Re-Vision Centre for Art and Social Justice Videos. The Re-Vision Centre for Arts and Social Justice is an arts methodology research hub at U of G that investigates the power of the arts, and especially story, to start conversations about the systemic (rather than individualized) injustices in health care, education, and the arts sectors.
