Abstract: 

At the age of 17, in 1942, Herb left high school to join the Air Force. In 1945, he entered OAC and studied Agricultural Economics. Following graduation, he worked 3 months at Canada Packers. He then returned to OAC, where he spent the next 22 years working at various roles. He served as Dean of Men, Student Counselor for 7 years and, having a Master’s degree in education from Cornell (1952/53), he was promoted to Registrar. About 1961 or 1962, when the Federated Colleges came into being, Herb was made Registrar of all three colleges (OAC, OVC, and MAC). He worked very closely with Dr. MacLachlan during the transformation to University of Guelph, being heavily involved in such critical projects as the formation of the Senate.

In 1971, Herb left the university to do a study for the Council of Ontario Universities for the purpose of creating an Application Centre common to all Ontario universities. He was appointed Director of the Application Centre that August, and he held that position until his retirement in 1989.
