Cahoots Theatre Project

Cahoots Theatre poster for Skull Riders
Dates:
1986-1991
Founded in 1986 by writer Beverly Yhap, Cahoots Theatre Project is a Toronto based, intercultural company with a focus on new writing. Yhap remained artistic director until 1992, when she was succeeded by Jean Yoon and Lynda Hill, who became co-artistic directors. Cahoots’ focus is on new writing by diverse people and as such, in 1990, a national conference called “Write about Now” was held and welcomed playwrights of diverse cultures and backgrounds to attend. Additional professional developments post-1992 include “Lift Off!”, which focused on play development, and “3D: Three Daring New Works by Writers of Diverse Cultures”, which focused on workshop production.

Artistic director from 2004-2009, Jovanni Sy once stated that Cahoots Theatre Project’s intent was to empower those that have the least voice in society. Cahoots Theatre Project continues to work under this mandate dating back to its inception and continuing into the present.

This collection consists of audio and video tapes from the Cahoots 1990 workshop Write About Now!, and performance files for productions of Jesse Glenn Bodyans’ Skull Riders, 1986, and Daniel David Moses’ Big Buck City, 1981.
