Pronunciation Groups

Would you like to learn and practice English pronunciation to improve listening and speaking?   

We offer four Pronunciation Groups to meet your interests and needs.  

Sounds 

  • Participants will meet weekly for 10 weeks to practice their English pronunciation for the 16 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds.  
  • Participants will progress through pronunciation activities for vowels and consonants in the textbook Clear Speech by Judy Gilbert. Participants will be able to use the textbook free of charge within the classroom. If you wish to make use of the book outside of the classroom you can borrow a copy from the library or purchase the book on your own. 
  • There is no prerequisite for participation.  
  • Pronunciation groups are open to University of Guelph students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff with English as an additional language. 
  • This program is offered in the fall semester. Registration opens in August.

Words 

  • Participants will meet weekly for five weeks to progress through word-level pronunciation activities in the textbook Clear Speech by Judy Gilbert.  
  • Topics include syllables, consonants, vowels and vowel rules, word stress, vowel length and clarity, and word stress patterns. Participants will be able to use the textbook free of charge within the classroom. If you wish to make use of the book outside of the classroom you can borrow a copy from the library or purchase the book on your own.  
  • There is no prerequisite for participation.  
  • Pronunciation groups are open to University of Guelph students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff with English as an additional language. 
  • This program is offered in the winter semester. Registration opens in December.

Sentences 

  • Participants will meet weekly for five weeks to progress through sentence-level pronunciation activities in the textbook Clear Speech by Judy Gilbert. Topics include sentence stress, sentence focus, emphasis of content words, de-emphasis of structure words, and thought groups. Participants will be able to use the textbook free of charge within the classroom. If you wish to make use of the book outside of the classroom you can borrow a copy from the library or purchase the book on your own. 
  • There is no prerequisite for participation.  
  • Pronunciation groups are open to University of Guelph students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff with English as an additional language. 
  • This program is offered in the winter semester after the conclusion of the Words program. Registration opens in December.

Dialogues and expressions 

  • Participants will practice pronunciation and speaking skills for everyday situations. It is typically offered as a weekly 1.5 hour session for 8-10 weeks.  
  • Discussion of context-specific vocabulary and idioms will allow participants to create dialogues which will then be reviewed as a group for appropriate language, expressions, pronunciation and sentence stress. Participants will then practice the dialogues in class and have access to them at home for further practice. 
  • Pronunciation groups are open to University of Guelph students, postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars, faculty, and staff with English as an additional language. 
  • This program is offered in the summer semester. Registration opens in April.
