Licensing

Copyright related to research data is limited to the arrangement of data into tables, figures, and databases constructed from the use of data, however, the raw data itself is not subject to copyright.

Managing your intellectual property rights and the use of your data by others can be specified through the use of licences. Many repositories have standard licences which can be employed to explicitly state what users can and cannot do with your data.

Our University of Guelph data repositories allow depositors to determine access and licensing conditions on each study they deposit.

For researchers choosing other preservation options, online tools are being developed to assist researchers in selecting and/or generating licenses.

Example:

Open Data Commons
