Cancellation Notice - Literature Resource Center

Rationale for Cancellation of Library Resource

January 1, 2019

Title of resource: Literature Resource Center

Cost of resource: $1,215 USD per year

Reasons for cancellation:

  • Cost: This resource does not provide significant value for its annual cost, especially considering its overlap with the Library’s existing e-journal subscriptions and the more extensive content provided by similar resources.
  • Overlap: This database has significant overlap with Literature Criticism Online, with Literature Online (LION), and with the Dictionary of Literary Biography Complete Online, which provide critical commentary for a much wider range of authors and time periods than Literature Resource Center does. The Dictionary of Literary Biography also provides unique critical overview articles to contextualize the published critical history for each author. As well, in most cases the full-text articles provided by Literature Resource Center are already available through the Library’s existing e-journal subscriptions.
  • Usage: Usage for Literature Resource Center database is relatively low, indicating that researchers are searching elsewhere for access to literary criticism content. By contrast, usage of the Literature Criticism Online database is much higher, indicating that it is the preferred access point for Guelph faculty and students.

Date access will cease: January 1, 2019

General Criteria for Cancellation of Electronic Resources

Cancellation decisions are in most cases based on one or more of the following criteria:

  • Cost: The inflationary costs of scholarly information continue to rise annually. In addition, the Library’s budget is particularly impacted by currency fluctuations (over half of the Library’s scholarly resources are paid for in U.S. funds)
  • Overlap: Significant content overlap with other Library resources
  • Usage: Past usage of the resource by University of Guelph (including University of Guelph Humber) students, faculty and staff
  • Scholarly need: Alignment of a resource with the University’s curricular and research programs; The scholarly importance of the resource (its centrality to the discipline and to accreditation requirements); the Library will prioritize keeping full-text (e.g. journal subscriptions) over indexes (e.g. BIOSIS, Communications Abstracts)
