Changes are coming to the library’s funding support for Open Access (OA) publication for campus authors. Effective September 1, 2015, the library will no longer pay the full author fee (called APCs) for articles submitted and accepted in BioMed Central OA journals.
The University of Guelph Library has been a full partner in the BioMed Central publishing initiative since 2006. Since the initiation of this unique partnership, the landscape for OA has radically changed. Key factors in this change include: significant growth in the number of OA journals; increased adoption of OA publication venues for Guelph faculty and researchers; the creation of the university’s OA institutional repository (The Atrium); and consolidation in the scholarly publishing marketplace. In 2014, BioMed Central was purchased by Springer-Verlag, one of the largest commercial STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Medicine) publishers in the world.
