Abstract: 

R.S. Gowe graduated from the OAC in 1945. He then went on to earn his masters degree and his doctorate from Cornell University in 1949. His PhD was in Animal Genetics with minors in Animal Physiology and Endocrinology. The Experimental Farm Services, Poultry Division of Canada Department of Agriculture then employed him. One of his major research projects was a long-term poultry selection study. He was head of the Breeding Unit of the Poultry Division, CDA until 1959, then head of the Animal Genetics Unit until 1965, then Director of the Animal Research Centre. While he was director of the Animal Research Centre, new facilities were built in Nepean.

After retiring from Canada Agriculture in 1986, he spent time as Director of Research Operations for Shaver Poultry Farms and later as a consultant in poultry breeding in the Department of Animal and Poultry Science at the University of Guelph. While residing in Ottawa, he was active in the consolidation of hospital services for the Ottawa-Carleton region.
