Timothy Findley Collection

Timothy Findley was born in Toronto, Ontario in 1930. Self-educated after grade 10. He began his acting career with Stratford Festival in 1953. Here he met Alec Guinness who urged him to go to England to study drama. In the early 60's Timothy left acting to study at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, England. Was part of the first cast, at the Edinburgh Festival of Thornton Wilder's "Matchmaker." Among other honorary doctorates, he received the Chevalier de l'Ordre de Arts et de Letters (1966), was an Officer of the Order of Canada (1986), received the Order of Ontario (1991), The Banff Centre for the Arts National Award (1998). Timothy Findley died in Provence, France, on June 20, 2002.The collection includes the make-up box used by Sir Alec Guinness in the 1957 movie “Bridge on the River Kwai”, given to Mr. Findley, who continued to use it until his final year as an actor, 1962.
