Collection of letters exchanged between Capt. John Playford Hales (1893-1918) and his brother Ernest Alfred Hales (1884-1959) during World War I.

John Playford Hales was a graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College in 1915. Located at the Arboretum is the Hales-McKay Memorial Shelter, named after John Plaford Hales (see RE1 UOG A0038). Capt. John Playford Hales of the Royal Air Force, was killed in action on August 23, 1918. The memorial was dedicated in the will of his late sister, Mrs. Kate Hales McKay, who was also a graduate of the Macdonald Institute, in 1911.
