Manuscript essays written in a fine copperplate hand over a period of time running from October 1802 to August 1817 with an additional note written some time after 1835. The bulk of the essays date 1814-1816 and deal with a variety of topics including matters of religion, capital punishment, savings banks, friendly societies, orphanages, meteorites, juvenile library, and lunatic asylum, etc. There is also an account of a voyage from Scotland to Halifax in June 1817 which includes a letter to the editor of the Acadian Recorder concernimg some recommendations for the Lancastrian School in Halifax.
