The company was founded by Eleanor Crowder in Ottawa in 1985 in response to the strong interest in popular theatre evident among members of the International Development. It was designed to promote possibilities of political change and action through the use of "Theatre of the Oppressed" methodology, which is is used to provide a kind of theatre where the play allows expression, by the audience, of real possibilities for positive action.
