Come together to learn, share strategies and ideas, and be part of a community that cares about the advancement of open education at U of G. Join the Open Education Community of Practice – co-led and developed by the McLaughlin Library and the Office of Teaching and Learning.
What is open education?
Open education is a movement dedicated to giving people access to high-quality education without barriers. Open education is often thought of as synonymous with open educational resources (OER) – materials that are free to use and licensed for reuse – but OER are only a part of open education. “Open education also includes opportunities for co-creation of knowledge, and connection with other open movements, such as open pedagogy, and open science,” said Jordan Pedersen, acting head, Research & Scholarship. “At U of G, open education is deeply aligned with our values of learner-centeredness, inclusion, and accessibility.”
What can you expect from attending the Open Education Community of Practice?
A monthly forum for members of the U of G community to learn, share strategies, ideas, advice, and collaborate, while building community around the use, advocacy, and advancement of open education and pedagogy, open educational resources, and affordable course content at U of G. “The topics and structure of the community of practice will be developed in the first meeting, but we are likely to have guest lectures, tool demonstrations, and opportunities to share best practices,” said Pedersen.
Topics may include:
- Understanding copyright when using or creating open educational resources.
- Using open pedagogy in the classroom.
- Making existing course materials open.
- Investigating how generative AI impacts open practices.
Who can attend?
All students, staff, and faculty are welcome to attend the community of practice. “It may sound most obvious for faculty members to join, but almost everyone on campus has a role in education,” said Pedersen. “If you’re a student who wants to learn more to advocate for more affordable course content, or you’re with a lab that wants to learn more about disseminating your findings in a way that supports open education, you have a spot in the Open Education Community of Practice.”
