The McLaughlin Library recently transitioned to a new authentication service, OpenAthens, that provides access to our electronic resources. While most users transitioned without issue, a small number of people who use the Zotero Connector browser extension have reported some difficulty accessing electronic resources.
If you installed the Zotero Connector browser extension before May 2025, it may still be using the old authentication service configuration, which will no longer work. Users with outdated configuration will see the following error when attempting to access electronic resources: “This site cannot be reached. The connection was reset. (ERR_CONNECTION_RESET)”.
If you encounter this issue, we recommend deleting the proxy settings in the Zotero Connector browser extension by following these instructions:
- Click on Zotero Connector
- Click on Options
- Navigate to Proxies
- Uncheck the Enable Proxy Redirection setting
- Delete the old proxy by selecting it in the “Configured Proxies” box and pressing the minus (-) button below it
- Clear your browser cache and cookies
- Close and open the browser
- Try to access the library resource again
