Academic Video Online Library Resource Highlight

If you’re wanting to embed streaming video into your course content – look no further. Academic Video Online (AVON) is a large, multidisciplinary streaming video collection, available through the U of G Library. “Academic Video Online is an important teaching tool at Guelph. It gives our instructors reliable, course-ready streaming video and saves them hours of hunting for usable clips, while students get seamless access to required films and documentaries from anywhere,” said Iman El Gamal, collections development librarian, Collections & Content.

Finding content beyond mainstream holdings

The platform includes documentaries, interviews, performances, news programs, newsreels, demonstrations, and other academic and educational content, and supports teaching across disciplines. Alongside its mainstream holdings from PBS and BBC, AVON also includes materials that are often harder to find, including ethnographic films, international festival documentaries, and social justice collections.

“Academic Video Online is especially useful for instructors who want to integrate streaming video into teaching – the platform’s clip, playlist, and embed options make it simple to drop segments directly into course materials and assignments,” said El Gamal. “Our subscription also allows us to put funds at the end of each term toward purchasing high-use titles in perpetuity, so AVON supports day-to-day teaching while steadily building a sustainable, long-term streaming collection for the library.”

What to expect when using AVON:

  • Fast discovery of videos across a range of topics and formats (e.g., documentaries, performances, interviews, demonstrations).
  • Tools for teaching (e.g., create clips and playlists, annotate, share, and embed content).
  • Accessibility-friendly features on titles (e.g., searchable, scrolling transcripts).
