As a U of G author, there are a variety of benefits when you choose to publish open access (OA). “The library has negotiated discounts for OA publishing that are a fast, and usually free way, to meet funder dissemination requirements,” said Ian Gibson, associate university librarian, research. “Longer term, since anyone can access open research, there’s more potential to have a far-reaching impact – especially for people in communities that don’t have access to scholarly literature.”
What is open access?
OA means research outputs like academic articles, are free and available to everyone, with minimal copyright restrictions, while making sure authors receive appropriate attribution. At the U of G Library, we’re committed to open access and invest in open initiatives by allocating part of our acquisitions budget to support open content and infrastructure.
There are benefits to publishing OA:
- OA increases citations for researchers
- OA enables researchers to retain control of their intellectual property
- OA provides practitioners, policy makers, and the public with access to research
- OA improves access to research for people around the world
- OA increases the value of research

Article processing charges and how we approach them
What are article processing charges?
Article processing charges (APCs) are fees charged to authors by some OA journals to make the articles immediately available to readers and to defray the costs of editing and publishing. APCs represent a significant and often unexpected cost for researchers who are committed to open access publishing. That said, the library has negotiated APC discounts – often full waivers – with publishers like Cambridge University Press, Elsevier, Oxford University Press, and more, representing thousands of publications.
