In August 2022, the UX Team tested the new self-checkout machines.

Research question

  • How can we make the new self-checkout machines better?

Methods

  • The UX Team tested a variety of scenarios including checking out (multiple books at a time, materials from different libraries, oversized items, items with different loan periods, etc.), renewing, and viewing "My Account" on the two new self-checkout machines.

Our recommendations

  • Double the timeout period
  • Change the instruction video and language so it accurately shows and states that individually scanning of barcodes is required
  • Add an "email receipt" option on the receipt screen
  • Place a recycling bin under each checkout station
