TRELLIS Survey UX Study

Today's Hours: 8am - 10pm - All service hours

In anticipation of a new Library Services Platform (LSP), the UX Team was tasked with exploring how and why users are using TRELLIS (our vintage OPAC). Since TRELLIS will be decommissioned with the implementation of a new LSP, the results will contribute to the Library’s communication strategy with TRELLIS users.

Research Questions

  • Who is using TRELLIS?
  • Why are they using TRELLIS?

Methods

  • We created a nine-question survey using Qualtrics. Participants were recruited using a pop-up window containing a link to the survey. This pop-up appeared when users landed on the TRELLIS homepage. The survey was also promoted in a news item on the library’s homepage
  • 48 people responded to the TRELLIS survey.

What did we Learn?

  • Users prefer TRELLIS to Primo for known-item searching because it is more precise and retrieves fewer irrelevant results
  • Some faculty members used TRELLIS because of its familiarity. They have always used it, so they continue to use it
  • Primo is preferred for unknown-item searching and browsing
  • 80% of respondents use both Primo and TRELLIS
  • Though respondents use TRELLIS in multiple ways (i.e. searching, placing holds, checking account), we cannot conclude that they prefer TRELLIS over Primo for all of these functions.

Our Recommendations

  • TRELLIS users need to be assured that the new LSP will offer as high precision searching as TRELLIS currently does
